School’s Out magic after-school in Kamloops: A place where kids and community thrive
On Mondays and Wednesdays at 3 PM, 18 kids from five different elementary schools in Kamloops gather for United Way BC School’s Out, a program delivered locally by the Salvation Army.

For two and a half hours after school ends, parents know that their children are safe and cared for while they are still working.
United Way BC School’s Out programs ensure school-aged children in Kamloops and across British Columbia have access to welcoming spaces where they can get the mental wellness and developmental support they need during the critical hours between 3 to 6 PM. Programs are free or low-cost.
Caring and learning

Each day, the kids know what their time at School’s Out will look like. The caring coordinators create a weekly schedule, giving the kids both structure and something to look forward to. The kids are so excited to come inside and put their belongings in their own cubbies, before enjoying a healthy snack. Then it’s time for learning and exploring! Some kids love to write stories, others are into sports, and a group of girls often spend the afternoon drawing together. The program gives kids the space to explore what they love and to feel proud of what they create. 7-year-old program participant, Blessing, she said that she loves coming with her siblings, and that the best part of School’s Out is that it’s fun!

Wrapping up the fun activities with a meal is a highlight. Meals are not only nutritious but also a chance to try something new as they learn about a variety of dishes from different cultures. There is always fresh fruit, vegetables, yogurt, and a few extra items for families to take home.
Connecting communities
What makes the program extra special is the sense of community it builds. Parents from different schools are making connections and becoming friends while their kids do the same. At pick-up time, families are often offered dinner or a snack, turning a simple after-school program into a shared community experience.
Parents say their children come home happy, full, and eager to share what they did that day. For many families, it has made evenings calmer and more connected.

School’s Out coordinator, Taylor has gone the extra mile to build connection and trust with the children. It’s important to her to support them—not only on Mondays and Wednesdays, but also other times that matter to the kids—like attending their Christmas concerts or birthday parties. While that’s not technically part of the job, it nurtures the relationships and builds a sense of belonging and care for everyone.
Thanks to United Way BC’s School’s Out and the Salvation Army mentors in Kamloops, this program is so much more than just a few hours after school; it is a place where kids learn, laugh, and grow, and where families and neighbours feel supported and connected.
