Feeding Hope: A food hub story
Hjorth Road is an inner city school in North Surrey, a culturally diverse neighbourhood that is home to many newcomers and low income families. Their student body consists mostly of immigrants and refugees, who are often struggling to make ends meet. A long-time teacher reflects:
“Over the years I have seen many students come to school without weather appropriate clothes, lacking school supplies, and often hungry. As teachers, we do our best to love our students and meet their needs, but our resources are more often than not incredibly limited.”

Through a partnership with CityReach, stewards of the Surrey Guildford Whalley Regional Community Food Hub, Hjorth Road’s students receive holistic supports to ensure they can learn well, and feel well, at school. The Food Hub provides students with nutritious food and so much more.
“Each week they deliver our students the most beautiful, fresh food hampers. At Christmas, they not only give the students each new stuffed animals, but they also bless the teachers with gifts of appreciation as well. From them, we have received books, fidget toys, puberty packs, and even help running our sports day. They have gone above and beyond to help meet our communities needs.”
Through their commitment to nourishing the school community, the Food Hub has had a transformational impact on students’ lives.
“Our students and school staff now count on CityReach to help fill the gaps and it is clear that they are making an incredible impact on our community. They say they’re in the hope business, and they are undoubtedly are!”
