A message from Andrew Callicum
United Way British Columbia, Director, Indigenous Priorities
September 30 marks a significant day in Canada’s journey towards reconciliation. It is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a time for us to reflect, acknowledge, and take action. As we wear our orange shirts, we remember the Indigenous children who were taken from their homes and placed in residential schools, and we honour the survivors, their families, and communities.
Today, our hearts go out to Indigenous Peoples, Survivors, families, and community members who are experiencing new or renewed grief as more harrowing facts are revealed and shared with the public. We stand in support of Indigenous communities in their journey towards truth and healing.
We also acknowledge the profound work of the Xyólhmet ye Syéwiqwélh (Taking Care of Our Children) team from the Stó:lō Nation. Their Phase 1 knowledge sharing has shed light on the missing children and unmarked burials at St. Mary’s Residential School, Coqualeetza Industrial Institute, All Hallows School, and Coqualeetza Indian Hospital. The truth arising from this work is a somber reminder of the real children and families who suffered immensely due to the residential school system.
At United Way British Columbia, we recognize that the path to reconciliation is ongoing, and that we have so much more to learn. We commit to educating ourselves about the history and impacts of the residential school system, and we pledge to reflect on the Indigenous experiences that are shared with us with the utmost respect and humility. We will continue to amplify Indigenous voices and be guided by Indigenous wisdom and insights as we navigate this path.
Reconciliation is a profound and continuous process, one that we all embark on together. As we reflect on this significant day and the path ahead, we are reminded of the importance of listening, learning, and understanding. We are all part of this journey, and every step we take together brings us closer to a future of respect, understanding, and healing.
