On Friday, July 26th, a team of volunteers from Interior Savings participated in a Day of Caring® to complete yard work for a household who was not able to maintain their yard this year due to health issues.

The team arrived early in the morning, full of enthusiasm to get started. Undaunted by the 4 foot tall weeds, they spent the next 5-6 hours working in the heat, pulling weeds, and hauling them to the nearest compost site. Thanks to the dedication and hard work of this volunteer team, this household now has full use of their yard again. For them and their dog!

This Day of Caring® was connected to the Better at Home program. United Way’s Better at Home program helps BC’s older adults continue living independently in their own homes by providing simple, non-medical home support services.

With nearly 700 volunteers putting in over 3450 volunteer hours in less than three years, a lot of work, learning, and connecting is getting done at United Way Days of Caring®.

The idea is simple. An organization has a project that has been sitting on the backburner like a new fence or a space painted, and a local business has a team of eager volunteers ready to get the job done. But it’s not just about the fence. It’s about building a sense of caring through volunteerism and connecting people with different skills, knowledge, and backgrounds. It’s about team-building and having the chance to learn about the programs available in our community that United Way supports.
