Veteran Homelessness Program
Preventing and reducing homelessness among Canadian Veterans
The Government of Canada’s Veterans Homelessness Program aims to prevent and reduce homelessness among Canadian Veterans.
It delivers support through two main streams:
- Services and Supports–offers rent supplements and wrap-around services, including housing placement, counselling, and treatment for substance use, to Veterans who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.
- Capacity Building Stream–Focuses on research, improved data collection, and enhancing the ability of organizations to deliver tailored initiatives for Veterans.
Since February 2026, a group of social service community partners, including the Island Health-funded Community Health Network, the Reaching Home-funded Community Advisory Board and local government representatives, have been coordinating a funding process for the Veteran’s Homelessness Program (VHP).
United Way BC has received interest from a number of local community organizations well positioned to deliver these supports across the Regional District of Nanaimo. As this is a new program to the region, United Way BC has been conducting engagement meetings with other Veterans supports services from across BC to ensure integration with those provincial or federal supports.
United Way BC anticipates being able to announce the successful funded partners by mid-June 2026.
