UNITED for Emergency Response

In times of crisis, United Way BC is here to lend a hand. Utilizing our extensive network of volunteers, partners, donors, and supporting agencies, we have organized strategic, rapid responses to the substantial challenges that affect our communities.

This year’s Drive-Thru Breakfast will help fund United Way BC initiatives in the South Okanagan region, including many that focus on emergency response, by assisting in critical situations, from wildfires and floods to welcoming displaced Ukrainians. They support the recovery and rebuilding of communities through funding and supplies, establishing long-term aid.

When people are in desperate need, initiatives like the United for BC Wildfire Recovery Fund can make an incredible difference, as it did for Fern, a North Shuswap resident who lived through the devastation of the fires in the region in 2023. “I hope that everyone in my community can have their needs met after this wildfire. Thanks to United Way BC, there’s hope for that,” she says.

When BC communities were impacted by flooding, United Way BC responded by volunteering on the ground, convening those who were involved, facilitating the donations of goods and services, and raising dollars to address critical social needs: shelter, food assistance, trauma and mental health supports, and the rebuilding of social infrastructure.

Whether through natural disasters or war, we are seeing an increased and compounding number of people displaced from their homes. Welcoming displaced Ukrainians into BC and helping them settle into new and unfamiliar surroundings while processing their trauma is another way we strengthen our communities. By supporting this year’s Drive-Thru Breakfast, you can also help people like 12-year-old Sofiia, who joined a traditional Ukrainian dance troupe, thanks to a United for Ukraine Local Love Fund.

“We instantly felt the support of the community,” says Sofiia’s mother, Mariia. “We were able to communicate not just with the Ukrainian people, but there are lots of English-speaking volunteers, so we could communicate with them, practice English and be friends,” she tells us.

You can help fund local United Way BC initiatives like these, which offer communities, from Summerland and Penticton to Princeton and Osoyoos, emergency relief and long-term recovery – building stronger, healthier communities.

Join us for breakfast, and let’s bring together the power of many to help those in need!
